Artist Lecture 2 - Hannah Pipper Burns

over the anvil from hannah piper burns on Vimeo.

On the 26th of October, Hannah Pipper Burns an alumni from St. Mary’s College, gave a lecture about her work as a digital artist. She mainly worked with editing and appropriating videos that she had found from the internet because they were faster and more accessible. The videos that she created were basically from old musicals that had narratives. She would add music on top of the video to add additional meaning to it such as the piece called “Over the Anvil”

It was interesting when she talked about starting talking about the process of creating some of her videos. She “started with the small things and then Build, shoot reels of images, cut and put them together.” From what I’ve learned about creating a video, you would have to start creating a large archive of video and images that you would like to work with and then narrow it down.

I kind of liked how she appropriated the media from old musicals and then added her own music creating her own version of what she thought. It was interesting when she was talking about the process of how she made this video. She would take out some parts of the old musical and add text to where there was a dialogue between the characters and then create a mash up of music that she found that would fit. In a way her work reminded me of a project that I made for my Digital and Timed Based Media class where we also appropriated videos from youtube and made something from it.
