"Love is but the discovery of ourselves in others, and the delight in the recognition." I don't know who said this, nor do I remember when I read it, but this quote has stuck with me for as long as I can remember.
I believe this philosophy applies not only to other people, but to ideas, and things, and actions as well. I have always thought of myself as a very loving person, and of the many things in this life that I have come to love, my two greatest passions are art and sailing.
My father taught me how to draw when I about five years old. I remember him saying over and over "Draw what you see Mimi, not what you know." I didn't understand what that meant for the longest time. I knew each flower, face, landscape, and house looked different, but I just couldn't figure out how to translate those differences onto paper. After many years of constantly drawing, I'd now like to think that I've at least slightly figured out how to "see."
I don't draw quite as much anymore as I used to. In about my senior year of high school, I started making the transition from drawing to digital photography. And then my sophomore year in college, I took my first darkroom photography class, and transitioned from digital to film photography. It is in this medium that I have developed most as an artist, and it is in this medium that I discovered myself most in.
Sailing is my other passion in life. I first started sailing when I was 8 years old, but then quit because I thought that it was the most pointless thing I had ever done. My older brother, who started sailing at the same time as me, continued to learn how to sail. Soon he started going to regattas, and then soon after that, he started winning regttas. Since I believed myself to be the more talented sibling between the two of us, I decided it was pertinent that I start sailing again, just for the sole purpose of beating my brother. Oddly enough, we never ended racing in the same class due to our age and gender differences. But before I knew it, I began to like sailing for more than just a way to outshine my brother.
I am now an Olympic-hopeful, and this summer will start my campaign for qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. To see my sailing resume, click here.
Sailing has taken me all over the world, from Ecuador, to Brazil, to Denmark, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Japan - just to name a few places. This ability to travel the world has also enabled me to grow as an artist as well. I always bring my camera to every new country that I go to, and I am able to immerse myself in so many new cultures and lifestyles, and discover more about myslef in the process of doing so.
