Project 3: St. Mary's Boneyard |
For this project I wanted to create the remnants of a creature that is much larger than us humans. I love the idea of the fantastical being present along with humans, and I wanted to keep the identity of the creature a mystery,. which is why I did not make any of the bones recognizable to a certain animal that actually existed. I wanted to keep the scale so that this creature would be much larger than us, and make the viewer feel small just by looking at it. Thus i focused on the ribs which would give a nice scale. The idea of bones goes along well with the fact that our college campus is built on a historic site and it is not a rarity to find shard of pottery or other artifacts around the area. I wanted the site to become an archaeological find and for the audience to feel as if they stumbled upon it. This also toys with the idea that this might be entirely plausible. I created the bones out of styrofoam so I would be able to carve the desired shapes. I think i succeeded in making the ribs look like actualy bones, but I would need to carve more to make the bones in general appear to be more round. I also wanted them to look old and buried, which I could have spent more time on painting them so they would look actually dirty, as well as rubbing them in the ground. The site I chose was alright for the intention that I had, but further investigation would help to create the atmosphere I was going for.
