When I heard the term “space”, I did not immediately jump to an actual space. I was more interested in creating spaces. I wanted to create a visual experience from something entirely fabricated.
I came up with the idea for the elements, and I chose fire, water and wind. I created wooden boxes that light up, and display the corresponding element with the box. I like the idea of the box, because the outside is completely sealed, and does not reflect on the nature of the box.
I wanted this piece to be a “portable size.” The environments I created were never meant to be huge. I feel that there is a certain intimacy about the small box tat you are able to peer through.
I am very satisfied with how the water turned out. The lighting for the fire was a bit harsher, and I intended for the light to be more distributed. The fire does, however, almost appear as if it is coming from a small flame, which I don’t mind.
The wind is a bit more ambiguous, but with a title and alongside the other two boxes it makes much more sense. I wanted this piece to exist as a whole, so I am glad that they all match on the outside, even if the insides are a bit inconsistent.
