A new culture of learning

There is indeed a new way of learning that involves a circle of individuals from different regions of the world teaching one another.  The author’s of A New Culture of Learning inferred that traditional teaching (the proctored instruction and providing information to students) is less effective then students learning by technology.  There whole idea is that technology brings fun, and fun encourages exploration, therefore knowledge.  Their focus was towards high school students.  Electronics do provide a diverse service, and with the different services, it brings into recognition all that the world has to offer.

From technology individuals can connect with others, create websites of their own, etc.  But, the two methods, traditional teaching and technology should not be compared because there are just some things technology cannot provide.  Technology cannot teach how to search for information.  The basics have to first be learned.  Technology can be a way to learn playfully, but some teachers, too, make fun a part of their curriculum because they know fun is key to learning for most.

And in fact, most technology such as computers, are known to be harmful to the eyes, brain, social life, as tested by scientists.

The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction Walter Benjamin (1935) paragraph II

http://www.design.wishiewashie.com/HT5/WalterBenjaminTheWorkofArt.pdf

Reproduced work looses its originality says Benjamin, because the remaking process of the object is similar to an assembly line. Nothing is unique about that. He also mentioned that with reproduced art, its location will change. Change of space can alter the meaning of the object. It can perhaps destroy its authenticity. Replicated artwork as Benjamin put it, can have a different impact on the public than the original.

Also, the trouble with reproduced artwork is problematic because of the quality. The quality might not be up to par with the original. One thing that i agreed with was that an artwork is transformed if it is reproduced, "duplicated" with a diferent material. Its meaning an sense of time could drastically change. Example, a sculpture that is reproduced in a photograph-could be a grainy image, or clear. The quality of the picture, or material it is printed on could change the sculpture.

Technique is another factor which could damage the authenticiy of an artwork. Use of a different technique to reproduce an art piece could change the meaning of the sculpture or its purpose because there are artist whos technique intentionally is a part of their art and underlying message.

I agree that all of these factors could transform an original artwork, possibly for the good or the bad, but in the case of Benjamin he writes as if reproduced art is deminished in quality and the other factors listed above.

Thoughts on Culture Jamming

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/11/movies/11raun.html - link to Deuce Bigalow European Gigalow builboard discrepency.

From reading this article I have gained an understanding of what culture jamming is.  It is a type of expression know one can stop- like a habbit, possibly a good or bad one.  These individuals of the culture jamming society are similar activists.  They are very opinionated and consider themselves voices of the public.  They serve to protect their fellow community, the young, etc. Jammers, just like activist, speak strongly about unjust situations and then initiate a plan to correct that problem; they most often never quit until their message is heard.  Jammers think they are providing a service to the public by graffiting, and pasting over billboards that send inappropriate messages.    Their motto is that everyone should have a billboard to showcase their thoughts.

Culture jamming is still needed today.  Advertising marketers need to be told when they are crossing the boundaries to inappropriateness.
I feel indifferent to the situation that culture jaming should persist, and whether i feel obligated as an artist to protest against inappropriate advertisements because as an artist, to get in the way of someone lively hood is selfish.  Also, as an artist, I would not want to censor someone work.

I do not mind if others like culture jammers decide to speak up about the inappropriate Ads because some of these billboards today need to be exterminated from the public view.  There are young children who see billboard Ads such as Deuce Bigalow : European Gigalow. But I am also indifferent because everyone needs a little laughter everyonce in a while, especially while riding on the highways, and some of these inappropriate billboards are funny.  Also, these inappropriate Ads could reduce stress, which could lead to an accident(s), or cause stress, leading to an accident(s).

The New Media

The new media is referred to as a new art form that has stemmed from the visual arts, and most importantly the conventional. Painting is labeled the old media and new media is considered to be news, all aspects of the internet, commercials of televisions, etc.
There are two types of new-media observers. Lay group are the people who are deeply concerned with culture, and are concerned that the new media will have a negative impact on the old media (conventional media), and possibly disrupt culture.  The author kind of called them hypicrits because he claimed everyone harbored a piece of new media-cell phones. The internet as an extension of the body is questioned by the author of this article as being  a form of criticism to human culture, or individual cultures.  I think otherwise because the media is not to blame, only the people themselves- people have already known about their cultures sexuality, sexual endeavors, etc, and they are willing to disperse their personal lives to the world. The world is then able to envade an individuals personal space through the web, which other cultures began to develope opinions about others.  That is the only fault the internet has in this.  And to relate the sexual aspect of the internet back to time and place, there has become an acceptance to the virtual, and how relationships and communication is removed from the real world.

He compares the boom of new-media to the boom of comic strips, but the only problem with this comparison is that technology is still going strong with the public, while comics are only looked at by a select few. Both of these items are forms of new media. And this new-media is allowing us to become more humane because connecting globally, we form a more personal relationship-with one another, and technology. But, new-media has been used for committing crimes, so maybe technology is making us less humane in a sense. So, new media jerks us back and forth.

New-media has also been said to change how we look at reality-we have come to accept that communication virtually has the same effect as communicating in reality. New media will definitely linger forever and possibly develop because of certain groups of people.  You have those people who observe and appreciate art, or pay media any attention, bu there is this group respond to the ignorance of advertisement companies. Television culture can often be careless of what they introduce to the public, so this group act like advocates for an entire community or even the world. But, refering back to my thoughts on culture jamming- artistic expression should not be censored. New ideas are developed and borrowed, and media will then continue to evolve. The new media has already started to develop or show its reach because people have learned they can express themselves anywhere using new media.

New Media In Indonesia
The Indonesian government influenced media culture, and it was only introduced to connect Indonesia with other world relations.  Television sets were dispersed, and then came additional programs like Asian sports, and heroism of entertaining films. With a taste of new-media and to see its reach, the internet became a famous way for the young to express themselves and find their identity.  This media was very powerful in their world because it was a way for the public to fight for democracy- the internet encouraged independence.

New media has evolved new disciplines like the visually impaired program of Indonesia, new media is therefore flexible and unlimited.  There are no boundaries.
This article aims to say that New media is not just an art form, rather it is also a cultural aspect within any society that allows expression, independence. With this fredom, and encouragement, new ideas are continuing to develop.

Peter Osborne – Distracted Reception: Time, Art & Technology
The author seems as if he is defining distraction in two ways.  Distraction is defined as how we watch the digital and how that is transformed from one digital form to the next such as from cinema to television, next the computer.  The other definition describes distraction as being disoriented from a focal point.

With each technical development, the form of media changes in how the public views it.  If I am interpreting this article correctly it seems as if the author would like for more technological progression, and for artist to use the latest materials and not go back to the original because he talks about old equipment making a comeback.  In comparison to the technological progression, it seems as if he is saying that the public never travels back to older technological inventions.

He then talks of how art or anything within the gallery distracts gallery visitors from life- how some attend gallery exhibitions to get away from life).  But, in the midst of distracting yourself, the artwork also distracts because it is visually demanding (so the artwork may break concentration).

Also, if the author is talking about which art of the Avante Garde verses modernist art more, there would be no winner because each gallery space has multiple artwork, people, and enough architecture that can distract.

Artifacts: A Conversation Between Hito Steyerl and Daniel Rourke

Digital glitches come from replicating digital information.  Circulation I believe is the major contender; digital information can mutate and produce unpredictable results.  Popular media allows for videos to replicate, and with replication format of the video changes, as well as its original state.  Like the fragmented example given within the article for YouTube videos.
If the internet Is dead it is not all over because the television I think has done a great job in supplying the world with news and fun, locally and internationally.  Possibly more art inventions will come after the internet dies.
