artist of interest: RK Laxman

Born Rasipram Krishnaswamy lyer Laxman, but best known as RK Laxman, he is a cartoonist and illustrator in India. He has been recognized most for his character, the common man, and in India is regarded as one of the country's greatest cartoonist/humorist. He had a life long interest with cartoons and illustration drawings, and during his college years he illustrated his brother's writtens stories in The Hindu. He began drawing political cartoons for newspapers around that same time he was also drawing cartoons for a famous humor magazine. After this experience, he was hired full time as a political cartoonist for the Free Press Journal. Following this job, he joined The Times of India and has held a career as a cartoonist ever since.Laxman has also done other work including book illustration, animation in Hindi films, and also wrote several novels. He has won many awards and is a highly respected illustrator and cartoonist both, in and outside of India.

The reason why I found Laxman interesting was because of his style of illustration. I liked how line and sketch oriented the cartoons were, which in some ways is similar to the way I think of cartooning. I also have read some of the translated political cartoons, which are also very interesting to look at.
